New Years Eve in Zurich

Having spent the majority of my New Years Eve’s in London last year I decided to do something different so I booked a last minute trip to Paris.

This year was much more organised and I pre-planned a trip to Zurich, Switzerland.

After a ridiculously early(late?) 3am start and a groggy drive to Gatwick I was finally on the plane ready for the short flight.

We arrived at the airport by 10 and got an easy train and then a tram to our Airbnb. A quick nap later and I was ready for some exploring. We were staying very close to the famous Lake Zurich so we walked along this into the centre for some sightseeing. It was freezing but so beautiful. There were stalls being set up for the street party later on.

Zurich is a great place to spend New Years Eve, I’d highly recommend it. There was such an atmosphere, there were DJs on the street and so many food and cocktail stalls lined the river banks. People had small fireworks and sparklers, but the main show started at around 20 past midnight when fireworks are let off from the centre of the lake. It was such a good show! People then continued to hang out on the streets and celebrate the new year.

Despite the Prosecco I was freezing! Make sure to wrap up warm if you’re planning on a winter break to Zurich!

Taking New Years Day walks to new heights, we decided to do a walk around Uetliberg, a mountain close to Zurich. We took a train there from Zurich central station, which took around 20 minutes and then went for a lovely walk at the top. It is definitely worth paying the 2 euros for the climb to the viewing tower at the top. We were up above the clouds on a beautiful sunny day, there are lots of trails you can do, short ones or walks up to about 3-4 hours. IMG_5258.jpg
